KIAN

Anger powers Kian as he strides to the labs. It bubbles hot and low in his gut and he has no idea what to do with it. He’s never felt such virulent emotion. It’s like a disease, eager to spread.

It wants out. It wants someone to consume.

Kian reaches the door of the squat building and draws in a steadying breath. The leader of the High Bound can’t feel like this.

Even if the girl he’s loved all his life just turned her back on him.

His hand is a fist as he scans the sensor and he has to work to unclench it, knowing he needs to make this feeling go away. Somehow.

Everything Nova just said to him in the upper decks is clinging to his consciousness. It’s like the words grew barbs and have sunk into his gray matter.

In the past, talking to Dex has always helped. It’s more than his ability to make anyone smile, no matter how impossible it may feel. Dex has always been able to see a problem from multiple perspectives. It’s why he was the natural choice to run the Provings.

Except Dex hasn’t been around the past two days. Not since the Remnants were sent back. And Wren was put in the brig. He gingerly presses his nose, glad there’s no ongoing damage from Wren’s headbutt. A part of him is glad she did it.

Except for brief corridor conversations, his cousin has been avoiding him, and Kian doesn’t blame him.

He probably has some anger of his own simmering in his gut.

Kian can’t help the frown, wishing he were here. He’s a fellow High Bound. If anyone can understand what Kian’s going through, it’s him.

Heading for the computer room, Kian expects to find it empty. He’ll check and then he’ll leave. He needs to keep moving. If he stops, the awful, hot feeling in his gut seethes and festers. It seems to need movement to rock it to sleep.

But as the door whooshes shut, Dex spins his chair around. They stare at each other for long moments. Something flashes in Dex’s eyes but he looks away. “You’re later than usual.”

Kian started his afternoon rounds the day after he was named leader of Askala. His father suggested it, being the most logical way for him to learn all the parts that make up the colony he’s now responsible for.

“I stopped off at Nova’s cabin.”

Dex straightens. “I told you she was fine.”

“I needed to see for myself. She wasn’t there, she was on the party deck.”

“Go Nova.” Dex whistles.

Nova, a sheen of sweat gilding her skin. Those drums seeming to make the air throb. Her lithe body so close to his. It was…intoxicating.

“She told me…” That I should be with someone else. “That Phoenix died this morning.”

“What?”

“Yeah, she said she’d been nursing him in her cabin. He died of the injury he sustained in the storm. The Unbounds sent his body out to the ocean.”

Dex relaxes back into his chair. “Well, one less thing to have to worry about, isn’t it?”

Kian’s whole body contracts.
